Sydenham Park in Keilor North could see its name changed in the future to a traditional indigenous title as was discussed in last week’s council meeting.
The change is in aim of making a more significant contribution following NAIDOC week.
Traditional owners of the land Wurundjeri Land Council would need to be consulted on the matter and would become a significant voice in the name change should it come to fruition.
Brimbank Mayor Cr Jasmine Nguyen said “The recent celebration of NAIDOC Week has highlighted the importance of recognising the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage of Brimbank.
“It’s essential that if any part of Brimbank is renamed to reflect this rich heritage that local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups are consulted.
“There is a formal process that needs to be worked through when considering the renaming of a locality so that Council meets its statutory requirements.”
Councilor Lancashire who raised the topic for discussion also said “I would like for Brimbank Council to explore the processes, costs and timelines required to change the name of Sydenham Park and the possibility of renaming it so that it reflects the significant Wurundjeri history of the area.”
