Sydenham bridge a blank canvas

The level crossing on the Melton Highway has been removed

The search is on for an artist to help Sydenham’s newest road bridge come to life.

Artists are being invited to submit expressions of interest to the Level Crossing Removal Authority for the design of artwork for open space beneath the eastern side of the bridge built to replace the level crossing on the Melton Highway.

The Level Crossing Removal Authority and Brimbank council will compile a shortlist of applicants, who will then be asked to develop proposals.

Sydenham MP Natalie Hutchins said the project would offer the winning artist plenty of scope for creativity.

“This is a great opportunity for someone to come up with art that reflects and celebrates our local community,” she said.

The Level Crossing Removal Authority said it hoped the artwork would encourage use of public space by members of the community and showcase a high level of artistic skill, innovation and aesthetics. The winning design would also need to reflect the unique cultural history, environment and sense of community of Sydenham.

Both the creativity of the design and the applicant’s qualifications and experience, would be considered.

However, there are no set guidelines or specifications for the commission and Aboriginal artists, experienced artists, and emerging artists are being encouraged to apply.

One side of the Melton Highway’s new bridge was opened to drivers and pedestrians in February this year.

Once work on an additional three lanes is completed, the other side of the bridge will be opened.

Submissions of expression of interest for the artworks are being accepted until Friday, March 30, with the project intended to be completed by July this year.
