The highest price paid for a house in Sunshine has been smashed by more than $500,000.
A four-bedroom, weatherboard house in Hertford Road sold for $1,615,000 on Saturday – $540,000 more than its reserve.
The property was advertised to sell for between $1 million and $1.1 million.
Auctioneer Craig Stephens, of Jas Stephens Real Estate, said an opening bid of $1.1 million set the tempo for the auction, which was fiercely fought out between four investors.
“It turned out to be a bidding war between two neighbours,” Mr Stephens said. “But not in our wildest dreams did we think it was going to go for that price.”
It was the first time the 697-square-metre property had come onto the market since it was purchased by vendors Thomas and Josephine Cannon in January 1930.
The land is directly opposite Sunshine Plaza Shopping Centre and is within the Sunshine Activity Centre Zone where four storey developments are allowed under the planning scheme.
Mr Stephens said the purchaser, who owns a number of properties in the suburb, bought the house as an investment and plans to rent it out. “He’s not looking to develop it,” Mr Stephens said.
Sunshine cracked the $1 million club in May, when a four-bedroom weatherboard house at 1 Walter Street sold for $1.03 million.
Just a month later the record was broken again, when a three-bedroom house at 1 Duke Street, in the highly sought after Matthews Hill precinct, sold for $1.1 million.
On the same day, a three-bedroom house at 133 Devonshire Road sold for $910,000. While over in Sunshine West, a four-bedroom house at 6 The Avenue sold for $830,000.
