Sunshine private hospital a step closer

A new seven-storey private hospital in Sunshine is a step closer to its expected 2018 completion date.

A planning permit has been lodged with Brimbank council for the new hospital to be built at 145-149 Furlong Road and 6 and 8-10 Ginifer Court.

The hospital, which will have a 150-patient capacity, is planned for land behind an existing three-storey medical centre and day hospital, both of which will be demolished.

Star Weekly revealed last July that $130 million had been earmarked for the project.

If approved, the hospital will also include a dispensary, cafe and 173 carpark spaces.

Part of Ginifer Court will be closed to incorporate the new building. Brimbank administrators chairman John Watson said the new hospital would complement the Sunshine health precinct.

“We’ve always said the private hospital proposal is a great thing for this area, a great thing for the health precinct,” he said.

“We see it as being very complementary to what is happening with the public hospital on the other side of the road.”

Property firm MacroPlan Dimasi’s national operations head, David Brown, told Star Weekly last year the new private hospital might include larger health providers already operating in the area to come in as “anchor tenants”.

Tenants could also include “clusters of allied health services” and not-for-profit agencies, such as Red Cross and the Salvation Army.

Meanwhile, a Sunshine medical centre specialising in cardiac care has been approved for 161 Furlong Road, St Albans.

Brimbank council is assessing an application for another medical centre, in Main Road East, St Albans.
