Despite a swelling membership at Sunshine Park Tennis Club, the club’s midweek ladies social tennis is still struggling to field enough players each week.

Club president Craig Vaughan said only half a dozen ladies play each week.

“We’re really struggling for numbers,” he said.

“It’s just an area of the club that’s not doing so well.”

Mr Vaughan and fellow member Julie Newsome have embarked on a membership drive to boost numbers.

Ms Newsome said some of the club’s present midweek members had been playing socially for about 40 years.

She said age was no barrier to entry.

“It’s open-ended.

“The more the merrier,” Ms Newsome said.

The club was established in 1955 and now has 130 members, a significant boost since 2011 when it was down to just 17.

Midweek ladies social tennis is played on Wednesdays from 10am.
