A new food service is making a difference for Sunshine families in need.

Helping Hands Mission opened its third Community Pantry last month, giving families and those in need a place to get the assistance they need to stay fed and healthy.

The Sunshine site welcomed its first clients in October, and comes after successful pantries were opened in Airport West and Bridgewater on Loddon earlier this year.

Clients will be able to choose 20 kilograms of non-perishable grocery items and will also receive a large box full of fresh fruit, vegetables and bread. Clients can access the service weekly with a health care card.

The Community Pantry opening comes after national food charity, Foodbank, released its annual Hunger Report which shows 3.6 million Australians have experienced food insecurity at least once in the past 12 months.

The Sunshine Community Pantry is at 20 Hertford Road, Sunshine.
