Beauty is subjective. But in the eyes of the judging panel charged with hand picking Australia’s most “stunning” libraries, Sunshine library is both bold and beautiful.

Last Monday Brimbank’s newest library was “highly commended” in the public library category at the Australian Library Design Awards held in Melbourne.

The Hampshire Road library, designed by Lyons Architects, was one of 33 libraries shortlisted for the inaugural awards, which showcased the best in contemporary library interiors and exteriors in the country.

Brimbank mayor John Hedditch said he was thrilled Sunshine library was shortlisted, one of just eight public libraries that made the cut.

“The new Sunshine library has cemented its position as an important resource and destination for the Brimbank community – and more specifically an integral part of the Sunshine lifestyle,” he said.

The library was opened almost a year ago as part of the new $52 million Brimbank Community and Civic Centre.

Lyons Architects is behind other well know civic buildings including the Royal Hobart Hospital, the Melbourne Brain Centre and the new Broadmeadows Magistrates Court. The firm will also design the Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital in St Albans.
