A Sunshine filmmaker has been nominated for an award at an internationally leading smartphone film festival.

Andrew Robb has been nominated for his short film Karl Heinz, which he will be showcasing at the SF3 Gala in Sydney on Saturday, November 5.

The festival received more than 300 entries from around the world that were created on phones or tablets, and offers $50,000 in prizes across multiple categories.

Karl Heinz is Mr Robb’s 15th short film, and he received the top prize at last years’ festival, for his film Odd One Out.

This year’s entry, Karl Heinz, is about a grumpy driver who installs a technical upgrade to his car with unexpected results.

Mr Robb said he filmed it while his family were visiting from Berlin.

“We were dealing with lots of lockdown constraints, the weather wasn’t great and we were looking for something to do,” he said.

“I’ve always wanted to make a film with my car, the old Volvo, so it seemed like a great opportunity to do that over the Christmas break.

“I used one of my family members who was in the film, he plays Karl Heinz.”

Mr Robb has been making films that show off Sunshine’s unique culture for over 20 years, including one about the old Millenium Man statue.

He said it’s terrific for other people to see a little bit of Sunshine on the big screen.

“I love being able to represent Sunshine and the west of Melbourne in film festivals, and Karl Heinz has played as far as Barcelona, Berlin, and Toronto,” he said.

For people who can’t make it to Sydney, SF3 will also be available online from November five to 20.
