The centre of Sunshine was officially declared booze free this week.
Sunshine police inspector Dave Byrt said it was now illegal to hold an open container of alcohol in the area.
“As of this moment it is an alcohol free area, you cannot hold an open can of alcohol in the CBD,” he said.
“It was only formally signed off a few days ago.”
Officially rubberstamping the Brimbank District Liquor Accord, an agreement between Brimbank’s ten major licensed venues, council and the police, which could potentially ban unruly patrons from all cooperating venues, Inspector Byrt said the accord would look to sign up bottle shops and sporting clubs.
“Our aim is to head into package liquor outlets,” he said.
“We don’t have a large nightclub issues, a lot of our issues come from package liquor outlets.
“Which leads to violence in the homes.
“There’s a significant number of package liquor outlets in Brimbank.
“The issues we have to address (with alcohol) are during the day and the early evenings.”
