Sunshine “blight” could become new cafe

A plan to convert a “blight” on Sunshine into a seven-day-a-week licensed cafe has gone to Brimbank council.

Applicant Greg Fee says Sunshine needs more casual dining options and believes the former petrol station building on Glengala Road can fill the spot.

Mr Fee’s plan proposes a licensed cafe that “will be a welcome addition to the community”, opening from 7am to 11pm.

“By day, the cafe will be a place of quiet contemplation,” his plan reads.

Mr Fee also wants a liquor licence.

In the same document, Mr Fee states that the existing building “detracts from the overall amenity of the Glengala Road shopping strip, and has been a blight on the local area for some years”.

However his plans outline only cosmetic refurbishments to the servo site.

“Only cosmetic improvements, such as cleaning, painting and minor landscaping, will occur around the building,” his application reads.

Council director city development Stuart Menzies said, if plans progress, a site assessment will be undertaken by an environmental expert to determine whether an audit of the land and buildings is needed.

“A service station is considered a potentially contaminating land use,” he said.

“Council is currently assessing this proposal.”
