Sun sets on McCracken Street library in Brimbank

Sunshine bookworms are going to have to look farther afield for their fix this month.

The temporary Sunshine library in McCracken Street will close permanently on July 19, while a new library at the Brimbank Community and Civic Centre opens its doors six days later, on July 25.

Resources will be transferred to the new Hampshire Road library – spanning two floors with free wifi – which opens at 9.30am that Monday.

Chairman of Brimbank administrators John Watson said the new service would “be like nothing we’ve seen in Brimbank before”.

“One of the first things people will notice will be the double height reading room. It’s surrounded by windows and is sure to become a favourite spot for library users,” he said.

“We’re also expecting the children’s zone to be very popular, especially the amazing storytime amphitheatre.

“There will also be a toy library, outdoor space and no-charge wifi throughout.”

The new library will offer 47 public computers, including dedicated children’s computers, a video game area, and book collections in English and 10 other languages.

The after-hours book chute will stay open at McCracken Street during the relocation and online services will continue as normal.

The new library will open 9.30am-8pm Monday to Friday, 10am-5pm Saturdays and 1-5pm Sundays.
