Suleyman re-elected despite big swing

Natalie Suleyman will continue to represent the St Albans electorate after being re-elected on Saturday night.

The former Brimbank councillor held one of the biggest margins heading into the election of 22 per cent.

She has held the seat since 2014 and faced plenty of opposition this year including from Liberal candidate and Brimbank councillor Maria Kerr, and another Brimbank councillor, independent Virginia Tachos.

A 2020-21 boundary redistribution resulted in most Albion and Ardeer being moved to the Laverton electorate, while Cairnlea voters were transferred from Kororoit to St Albans.

After 63.9 per cent of the votes had been counted, Ms Suleyman has received 44.3 per cent of the first preference votes, down 16.3 per cent from the last election.

Ms Kerr had received 25.5 per cent of first preferences, up 1.6 per cent from the Liberal party’s vote in 2018.

In two party preferred, Ms Suleyman leads with 59.8 per cent compared to Ms Kerr’s 40.2 per cent, a swing of 12.3 per cent.

Ms Kerr said on social media that herself and Ms Tachos has aimed to make the seat marginal.

“As councillors we have seen first hand the neglect we have endured being a safe seat, irrespective of what party held the seat,” she said. “This result is a win for the entire community.”
