A Melbourne Airport rail link through Sunshine to the city is still “on the table,” a Brimbank council administrator says.
At a Metropolitan Transport Forum late last year, airport representatives said the international market was growing faster than projected and it had invested in “airport access infrastructure”, including the “preservation of rail easements”.
Council administrator Jane Nathan asked at the forum about the likelihood of a future rail link incorporating Sunshine.
“I asked a specific question about a rail link and they said it’s still on the table,” she revealed to Star Weekly last week.
Melbourne Airport’s presentation notes for the forum said the need for an airport rail link was “strong”, with passenger demand expected to double by 2033.
Airport management’s vision is to deliver a ‘city to sky’ experience for all passengers. “We support a Melbourne Airport rail link, and the East Albion route via Sunshine is preserved in the Melbourne Airport masterplan 2015,” corporate and
public affairs executive Carly Dixon said.
“We understand the state government’s focus is on improving the metropolitan rail network before adding additional services, such as an airport rail link. We will continue to work with government to develop plans for an airport rail link delivering a reliable, frequent and affordable service.”
