Safety in Sunshine will be improved by a revamp of Dawson Street to include an illuminated pedestrian shelter.

Brimbank council will use a $250,000 state government grant to build a 50-metre long shelter on the east side of the street.

A continuous strip of LED lights will also be installed in the kerb next to the shelter.

The revamp will develop better footpath links to the Hampshire Road shopping strip, Sunshine Leisure Centre and Sunshine shopping centre and interchange.

Overhead lighting in the council carpark will also be upgraded to meet Australian standards.

Chairman of Brimbank administrators John Watson said the revamp would reinforce the link between the new multi-deck carpark and Service Street.

“These improvement works will add to the various other projects being undertaken in the Sunshine town centre, including the improvements to Hampshire Road … and the construction of the Brimbank community and civic centre,” Mr Watson said.

“This is very much an exciting time for Sunshine as it re-emerges as one of Melbourne’s great centres.”
