A mural is being displayed in Sunshine North with the intention of promoting discussion around gambling harm.
The mural is on the corner of Ford Avenue and Furlong ROAd in Sunshine North and is intended to speak about and offer hope regarding gambling harm, particularly with a view to young people and the dangers of gambling addiction associated with betting apps, devices and gaming.
The mural was created by Sebastian Fransz, a Melbourne-based visual artist working across drawing, oil painting and murals.
He paints mural work professionally and facilitates community art projects with diverse groups of people. This project consisted of a series of co-design workshops facilitated with young people from Young Leaders of the West, with support and input from IPC Health and Brimbank Council.
Multiple designs and concepts were refined across the workshops. The final design was installed as a large-scale mural painting, depicting a narrative in which a young person is walking along a path, away from the risks of gambling harm and toward a more positive outcome.
The young subject moves away from these and toward a green, open space, with signage and people encouraging them along their way. A rainbow and crowd of people signal the positive end of the mural, accompanied by a big sign containing contact info for the Gamblers Help Youthline.
