Station paths on a roll

Work has begun on a new shared cycling and walking path.

Work has begun on a new shared cycling and walking path to link Sunshine station to Albion station.

The $1.3 million project will better connect Sunshine’s CBD to the Albion train station as part of the Sydenham-Sunshine bike path and the Sunshine trail.

The project will include a new path along Harvester Road, which will link Sunshine station to the existing off-road shared user path over Anderson Road.

Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said the path would help close gaps in the Sydenham-Sunshine bike path and provide safer cycling and walking in the area.

“We’re improving access to the Sunshine CBD for cyclists and walkers − this helps to create vibrant spaces where people feel safe and enjoy shopping,” she said. “Once completed, this project will provide a vital connection for cyclists and pedestrians to travel off-road, from Sydenham to Sunshine and on to West Footscray via the Sunshine trail.”

The $1.3 million project will also include additional safety improvements.

Speed limits along Harvester Road will be reduced from 60km/h down to 50km/h, with current 40km/h zones to remain in place.

North-bound traffic will be reduced to one lane along a 500 metre section of Harvester Road, from Hampshire Road and past Devonshire Road.

As part of the project Harvester Road will be temporarily closed to north-bound traffic between Dickson Street and Foundry Road from Tuesday, May 8 until Tuesday, May 29.

Work is expected to finish in late 2018.
