In partnership with local councils, the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) is holding a series of information sessions aimed at prospective candidates and the wider community.
Sessions can be attended both in person or online, and will provide information about the role and purpose of local government, roles and responsibilities of the mayor, local councillors, and the chief executive, election process and candidate requirements, councillor training and development opportunities, as well as what newly elected councilors can expect after an election.
Participants can register to attend more than one session, including outside their municipality.
To support and encourage diverse candidates, MAV will host additional sessions for women, people with disabilities, LGBTQA+ people, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, youth, and linguistically diverse communities.
The next local council election will be held in October 2024.
To become a candidate, residents must be an Australian citizen aged 18 years or older, be enrolled in the council they’re contesting and have completed the mandatory local government candidate training.
The metropolitan west session will be held on Wednesday, June 5, at the Wyndham Civic Centre, 45 Princes Hwy, Werribee.
The metropolitan north session will be held on Thursday, July 18, at the Town Hall Broadmeadows, 10 Dimboola Rd, Broadmeadows
