St Albans man killed by passing truck on Western Ring Road

A man has been killed by a truck on the Western Ring Road after stepping out of a car to be sick.

The 34-year-old man had been a passenger in the back seat of the packed car. The group were on their way home from a night out when he asked the driver to pull over because he was feeling unwell.

The driver steered into the emergency lane and the St Albans man stepped out on the driver’s side of the vehicle, stumbling into the path of a passing truck.

He was rushed to hospital but died shortly after arrival.

The crash happened on the Western Ring Road in Glenroy between Sydney Road and Widford Street about 1am.

The truck driver, a 57-year-old Sunbury man, made a statement to police and was allowed to leave the scene.

The driver of the car was later found to have a blood alcohol reading of three times the legal limit.

The man’s death brings the road toll for 2016 to 148, 21 more than at the same time last year.

Police Statement

A man has died in hospital after getting out of a car on the Western Ring Road at Glenroy earlier this morning.

The incident happened on the ring road between Sydney Road and Widford Street at 12.50am.

Police have been told the 34-year-old St Albans man, who was travelling in the rear driver’s side passenger seat, asked the driver to pull over as he felt sick.

The driver pulled up in the emergency lane and the man got out of the car.

Investigators believe that the man stepped out too far into the left running lane where he was struck by a passing truck.

The truck driver, a 57-year-old Sunbury man provided a statement to police and was allowed to leave.

The driver of the car, a 31-year-old St Albans man, was conveyed to Fawkner police station for a breath test which returned a positive reading of 0.153per cent.

The three other passengers in the car were not injured.
