Spike in burglaries in Keilor Park and St Albans

A spike in day-time burglaries in Keilor Park and St Albans has local police urging residents to be alert.

Residents living north of Calder Freeway and east of Keilor Park Drive were warned on the Eyewatch– Brimbank Police Services Area Facebook page to be on the lookout for suspicious behaviour.

There had also been “a fair bit of [burglary] activity” in Main Road, Sunshine Avenue, Taylors Road and The Esplanade over the past week, police said, with robberies resulting mostly in the taking of cash and jewellery.

A number of small businesses and restaurants in Derrimut had also been hit recently, with thieves targeting cash registers.

Sunshine police’s Leading Senior Constable Matt Mudie urged traders to remove takings from their till and “leave registers open showing would-be offenders they are empty so they’re less likely to be targeted”.

Police also reported a series of garage burglaries in Sunshine North during afternoons and overnight between Metherall and Cary streets, and Suffolk and Ballarat roads.

Senior Constable Mudie said there had been an “obvious pattern of garages being targeted”.

“Over the past week, we’ve seen a definite spike in numbers,” he said.
