Brimbank’s police service area has seen speeding offences top the list of driving offences out of a total of 195 driving offences recorded over the Easter and Anzac Day period.
Victoria Police were out and about from Thursday, April 14 until Monday, April 25 as part of an extended road policing operation known as Operation Compass.
According to Victoria Police, recorded driving offences in the Brimbank police service area included 54 speeding offences, nine drink drivers, seven drug drivers, 18 disqualified drivers, 17 unlicensed drivers, 15 seatbelt offences and 15 mobile phone offences.
Victoria Police acting assistant commissioner of road policing David Clayton it was “disappointing” that police detected 12,791 offences as part of the operation across Victoria.
“That’s almost 13,000 instances of people making poor decisions and putting themselves and others at risk on the road,” he said.
“Tragically five lives were lost during Easter – four of them pedestrians struck by vehicles.
“With worsening weather conditions and reduced visibility as winter approaches, it is imperative motorists and pedestrians look out for one another.”
According to Victoria Police, speeding offences accounted for almost 40 per cent of the recorded offences across the state, with 4966 speeding offences recorded.
Police also conducted more than 182,000 roadside alcohol and drug tests, with 855 motorists recorded with drink or drug driving offences.
