More social and affordable housing is now available in Brimbank, with 10 properties recently completed and another four under construction.

The houses are part of 51 new social and affordable homes the state government is building in Brimbank.

A Homes Victoria spokesperson said the state government was striving to provide homes for those who need them most.

“This includes 14 homes recently completed or under construction in the Brimbank local government area, with a further 37 in the planning process,” the spokesperson said.

The 10 completed homes are in Albion and Sunshine, with work finishing on the properties earlier this month.

In St Albans, there are four houses under construction.

The spokesperson said these houses are in addition to the state government’s Big Housing Build program, which was announced in last year’s state budget.

Under that program, more than 12,000 new homes throughout metro and regional Victoria will be built each year for four years.

Brimbank and the western suburbs were named as priority areas for the program.

At the time, Brimbank council welcomed the municipality’s status as a priority area.

Council in its 2017 housing strategy plan said it wanted to ensure that existing social housing is safeguarded while encouraging the further provision of housing.

Victorian Council of Social Service data shows that Victoria has the lowest level of public and community housing stock in the Australia, at just 3.2 per cent.

VCOSS is calling for an extra 60,000 houses in Victoria by 2031.
