Soccer festival kicks off

A celebration of women in soccer is coming, with the Brimbank Female Football Festival kicking off next month.

Taking over Keilor Recreation Reserve on Sunday, March 4, the Football Festival will give aspiring female players the chance to show their talents in front of players from local National Premier League sides as well as players from Melbourne City FC.

Brimbank council partnered with Football Federation Victoria, Melbourne City and Victoria Police to deliver the event, and mayor Margaret Giudice said it would be a fun-filled day for women of all ages.

“We’re very happy to partner with the FFV to bring this festival to the community with a focus on increasing participation by women in soccer and introducing the world game to kids,” Ms Giudice said.

“The main event is the women’s seven-a-side tournament, but the festival has a strong focus on encouraging women to think about other ways they can participate in the sport, for example learning coaching and refereeing skills, or even being part of social programs.”

The day will feature mini-roos games, a Melbourne City clinic, Soccer Mums introduction and a seven-a-side tournament.

Clubs and community members interested in fielding a team in the women’s seven-a-side tournament can register now.

The day will run from 9am-6pm, and will also have WNPL matches, player appearances, inflatables, and food trucks.
