Soccer app kicks off

More than 80 students from Keilor Downs Secondary College met some of their soccer heroes during the launch of a new coaching and training app.

Former professional player and manager Michael Kathopoulis designed the app, On The Ball, with the idea of giving players, ranging from beginners through to experts, access to professional tutorial videos.

The Keilor Downs students visited Lakeside Stadium, home of South Melbourne FC, to run through some of the drills from the app with soccer legends Shaun Wright Phillips (Manchester City), Jordan Stewart (Leicester City) and Joleon Lescott (Wolverhampton and Everton), along with Aussie stars Melissa Hudson and Robert Stambolziev.

The training videos run for 20 seconds and are followed by written explanations to reinforce the lessons.

Wright Phillips, Stewart and Lescott are three of the players who will feature in the app, with Kathopoulis saying the innovative tutorials would help improve all players.

“This app allows anyone, anywhere to improve their technical skills and potentially become a professional player themselves.”

The app will be launched early next year.
