Six people were arrested last Wednesday as part of a police operation in Sunshine.
Police from the Transit Safety Division, Public Order Response Team, Mounted Branch, local uniform and Offender Management Team conducted Omni Operation in the Sunshine area.
Omni provides police with additional powers to detect weapon offences within a designated search area.
As part of these powers police can conduct limited searches of people for weapons.
A police spokesperson said the highly-visible operation aimed to detect weapons offences, enhance community safety, gather intelligence and deter anyone who may think that carrying a weapon in the community is acceptable.
“Police conducted 156 searches and 130 vehicle checks during the course of the operation,” the spokesperson said of the Sunshine operation.
“Thirty-six offences were detected, including three weapons offences and six breaches of the chief health officer directions.
“In total six arrests were made and three vehicles were impounded.
“This should send a very clear message to anyone carrying a weapon – you are going to get caught and the police will hold you accountable.
“We will continue to have a highly visible presence and patrol community locations including train stations across the network to prevent crime and identify and arrest offenders.”
