Being a sheriff in Victoria doesn’t come with a star-shaped badge and a cowboy hat like in old-time western films – but it does come with a lot of responsibility.
The job description includes tracking down defendants and collecting payment for outstanding debts, working with police on road block operations and using technology to identify cars that have outstanding warrants.
If that sounds like your cup of tea, the Victorian Sheriff’s office is recruiting in the western suburbs.
Victorian Sheriff Brendan Facey says sheriff officers play an important role in the justice system and enforce warrants issued by the court.
“Sheriff officers make members of the community accountable for their fines and infringements and contribute to a safer Victoria,” Mr Facey says.
Saneeta worked in customer service before she became a sheriff’s officer in Melbourne’s north-west metropolitan region.
She’s been in the job for almost a decade and puts her longevity down to the varied nature of the role.
“The job always gives you variety,” she said. “You’re dealing with different people from different backgrounds every day … you try and find a way to help them resolve their matters. It’s a great job and it’s rewarding.”
The sheriff’s office is seeking dedicated applicants aged above 18 from Melbourne’s western suburbs to join Saneeta in the north-west metropolitan region.
Recruits receive 12 weeks of pre-service classroom and in-field training before graduating as a sheriff’s officer.
