Shave for a cause

One year after adopting a half-shaved, undercut hair style, Keilor East’s Beth Guglielmini is ready to go all the way in the World’s Greatest Shave later this month.

Ms Guglielmini (pictured) said her move to the undercut hair style last year had sparked an interest in taking part in the upcoming shave, which raises money for cancer research.

“I was thinking about getting an undercut, but I jumped online before that to see how long it would take to grow back and look like a ‘normal’ mum again,” Ms Guglielmini said.

“Everything I found online was about chemo patients in recovery and information for them, so that got me thinking in the first place about doing the full shave.

“For me it was a choice, but for so many people it’s not, so I want to help them,” she said.

Ms Guglielmini has lost an aunt to breast cancer and her grandfather to pancreatic cancer, while her mother had a melanoma removed when in her 20s.

“Most people know someone who has been affected by cancer,” she said. “There’s 35 people a day in Australia diagnosed with cancer … they are not age specific, so young people do get them. Australia is one of the foremost countries in cancer research, so we might not get a cure tomorrow, but we will get there.”

Ms Guglielmini’s seven-year-old son Alexander will also shave his head on March 18.
