A Tullamarine tobacco store has been targeted in a second suspected arson attack in just over a week, with detectives from the Arson and Explosives Squad linking both incidents as part of an escalating investigation.

The most recent fire broke out in the early hours of Wednesday, April 30, when emergency services were called to the Melrose Drive premises about 1.20am.

It’s believed offenders used a vehicle to ram the store’s roller door before pouring an accelerant inside and setting it alight.

Fortunately, no one was inside at the time, but the damage to the building is extensive.

The earlier attack occurred on Tuesday, April 22, when local police on patrol noticed flames coming from the same premises about 5.20am.

Officers acted swiftly, using fire extinguishers to contain the blaze before firefighters arrived to fully extinguish it.

While the store was unoccupied, the fire still caused significant damage.

Detectives believe the two attacks are linked and are appealing for public assistance.

“This is yet another example of reckless conduct which could have gone horribly wrong, with lives potentially lost,” Detective Inspector Chris Murray said.

“The significant risk this poses to the broader community is completely unacceptable.”

Mr Murray urged anyone with information, CCTV, dash-cam footage, or suspicions about illegal tobacco sales to come forward.
