The victim of Wednesday night’s fatal hit and run in St Albans has been revealed as 78-year-old Arthur Frangis.
Mr Frangis was walking home after volunteering at his local soccer club canteen when he was hit by a car travelling east on Main Road East in St Albans, at the corner of Erica Avenue, about 9pm.
He was just metres from the St Albans home he had lived in for 54 years after moving to Melbourne from Greece in the 1960s.
A passerby called emergency services but Mr Frangis died at the scene.
He leaves behind his wife Helen and three children, who are pleading for the driver responsible to come forward.
“I wish he’d hand himself in so we can learn the cause,” son John told Nine News.
“He was a thoughtful person, always put his family first,” he said.
“He was catering at the soccer club, when he finished he made his way home, but didn’t get there.”
The Westvale Soccer Club paid tribute to Mr Frangis on its Facebook page.
“A much loved and respected person at McKechnie Reserve, Arthur devoted his time and effort to the club – volunteering in the canteen and serving at the bar.
“A true club legend who will be sorely missed.
“All our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.”
Police believe Mr Frangis was hit by a red hatchback.
Detective Senior Sergeant McArthur said Mr Frangis’ family was in disbelief and very keen for the driver to come forward to “ease the pain” while they grieve.
“We’re looking for a red coupe, between we think a 2007 and 2013 model, with a hatchback shape,” he said.
The vehicle is believed to have damage to the central bonnet and windscreen.
