Purple and yellow, the colours of the Cancer Council’s Relay for Life, went round and round at St George Preca Primary School in Caroline Springs last Thursday.

Pupils, staff, cancer survivors and carers banded together for the round-oval marathon to raise money for cancer research and promote healthy living.

The day was a chance for the community to show their support for the Cancer Council and remind children of the importance of good physical health in preventing disease.

Learning and teaching director Shelly Stuart said the school had put on Relay for Life events for the past two years, raising more than $7000.

“The reason we became involved was because we have so many people in our community who have been affected by cancer in some way – teachers, students, parents and obviously extended families,” Ms Stuart said.

“Cancer is something that definitely touches everybody and this event is something important we wanted to get behind.”

Teachers ran a range of fun healthy-eating workshops to get youngsters thinking about what they put in their mouths.

“We want to instill that message in the children,” Ms Stuart said.

The school raised more than $5100 for the Cancer Council last week.
