At just 13 years of age, Tegan Matthews is building a sporting resume that would make most adults envious.
Tegan is now in her second year playing for the Keilor Football Club and has quickly developed a strong reputation.
With the AFLW growing by the year, Tegan hopes to one day play football at the highest level.
Her aspirations received a boost earlier this month when she was selected in one of the School Sports Victorian teams to contest the School Sports Championship, which will be held in Adelaide from July 21-28.
Tegan said the opportunity was one she was looking forward to.
“It’s a really good opportunity for me to play at a high level,” she said. “I’m really looking forward to meeting everyone and seeing how they go about things.”
Tegan will be playing against older girls, having been selected in the under 15 team, but that doesn’t intimidate her.
“I know I’m going to get knocked around. That’s going to happen, but you’ve just got to go with it.
“My mum just tells me to tuck and roll.”
As for the games, Tegan hopes to spend her time in the midfield.
“I prefer playing in the midfield and winning my own ball, but I also play a bit up forward when playing against the older girls,” she said.
Tegan one day hopes to go to Melbourne University and play in the AFLW, but she also has a budding basketball career.
She started playing representative basketball in 2014 for the Melbourne Tigers and has since played in the under 12 Victorian Championship and moved across to Keilor Thunder for the 2018 season.
