Melbourne Airport’s third runway plans have been set back due to the COVID-19 crisis.
The airport released a statement last month confirming the public consultation process, which was due to take place in early 2021, has been pushed back.
“Melbourne Airport remains committed to preparations for the third runway which will support the movement of people and goods for many years to come, stimulating jobs and the Victorian economy,” the statement said.
“However, our public exhibition period and community engagement activities for the Draft Major Development Plan will be postponed as we adhere to current strict social distancing measures.
“We do look forward to formally engaging with the community at a later date when it is safe to do so and we will announce the new public exhibition period on our website.”
While it may be a small deferral, public consultation is a major issue for the airport.
Additional noise which would be generated by extra aircraft has been a hot issue in Brimbank, particularly in the suburb of Keilor where locals have continued to voice their displeasure over the plans.
Many criticised the airport after it backflipped on the orientation of its third runway, deciding on a north-south runway, which would fly over Keilor.
There has also been questions raised over the public consultation process up until this point, but the airport says it has a team on standby to assist when required.
