Runway concerns mount

The feared effects of a proposed third runway at Melbourne Airport reach as far as residents living in Braybrook as the Melbourne Airport Community Aviation Consultation Group ticked over 800 community submissions on the airport plan last week.

A Braybrook resident whose house lines up with the north south runway said they noticed an increase in planes prior to the pandemic and was often woken at night.

“Prior to the pandemic, we already saw an increasing number of planes flying overhead,” the resident said.

“I complained to AirServices Australia twice in 3 years.

“The reason I complained was because of the large number of planes trying to land in the wee hours of the morning, 3-6am, over a dozen planes within an hour at times.

“The planes do wake me up multiple times/night.”

Braybrook is approximately 16km away from Melbourne Airport.

The resident wants curfews put in place to stop these disruptions from happening in future.

“We cannot stop planes from landing in Melbourne, but we should be able to have a curfew, so residents on the ground can sleep and function like normal human beings in day time,” the resident wrote.

Others concerned about the the proposed runway include schools, particularly ones closer to the airport in Keilor.
