Road blitz nabs pedal pushers

Speedsters and others drivers flouting the road rules copped the wrath of the law on Hume and Macedon Ranges roads during a recent police blitz.

Operation Arid over the Labour Day long weekend stung 35 speeding motorists in the Ranges and 17 in Hume.

The four-day operation ran from midnight on March 10 to midnight March 13.

Five unregistered vehicles were picked up in the Macedon Ranges and three vehicles were impounded, while two drivers were found to be disqualified or suspended.

Another two drivers disobeyed signals, two blew over the blood alcohol limit and two were nabbed without seatbelts on.

Macedon Ranges highway patrol officer Senior Constable Jamie Jordan said road safety messages are not being heeded, despite police warnings.

“People still don’t keep to the speed limits, or obey their licence conditions, and we’re still getting people with significantly high blood alcohol readings, even though we’ve had speeding and drink-driving campaigns going for years,” Senior Constable Jordan said.

“If you think that you’re over the limit, don’t risk it,” he warned. “It will cost you $800 to $1200 before you even reach the courts, or worse, you could get seriously injured or killed, and endanger all the other drivers on the road.”

He urged drivers to stay vigilant and safe by sticking to the road rules.

In Hume, 25 drivers disobeyed signs, 17 were caught driving unregistered vehicles, four were already disqualified or suspended from driving, seven were unlicensed and three were caught for using mobile phones.
