A Derrimut baking student says her recent success at the Geelong Baking Show has increased her appetite for a career in the industry.

Huda Abushwima, who placed third in the gourmet pull-apart loaf category at the show, said baking in a competitive environment was a challenge she relished.

“I have a real passion for competition and was determined to present myself at my best,” she said. “I made a pull-apart with pumpkin bread, cheese, spinach and garlic – and I was very pleased with how it tasted.”

Ms Abushwima said moving to Australia from Jordan seven years ago had inspired her to follow her passion.

“Back in Jordan I did nursing, but when I moved out here I really wanted to go with my passion,” she said.

“I’m always baking at home for my husband and children, but I usually make too much which ends up feeding the birds.

“So I decided to enrol in the baking course at Kangan so I can feed other people, not the birds.”

Ms Abushwima hopes her success at the baking show is just the start of a promising career.

“A few other people in my course also won awards at the show, which is an effort we’re all incredibly proud of considering we’ve only been doing the course for six months,” she said.

“As for myself, I’m making sure I continue to set myself goals. I want to be known for creative food ideas.

“I’m currently working on a food which hasn’t been seen in Australia before and I’d love to open my own business.

“I’m also hungry for another competition.”
