Perseverance and resilience are key qualities being fostered in Victoria University Secondary College students as the school tweaks its approach to good reading.
Teaching and learning coach Athena Vass said the school was reworking the way it goes about rewarding students as they prepare for Literacy and Numeracy Week (August 31 – September 6). She said recognising effort was a key focus, with teachers exploring research by University of Melbourne professor John Hattie that shows giving students effective feedback helps them set goals and improves overall effort.
“VUSC has celebrated a strong reading culture at the college, where students enjoy reading in every classroom daily,” Ms Vass said.
“Students at the junior campus will receive ‘most improved reader’ awards.
“And, for the very first time, one student has been nominated from each class in years 7-9, ” she said. “Teachers are also nominating students who are outstanding readers for their year level. [Teachers] are also seeing the importance of recognising effort as a new focus.
“Reading fosters lifelong learning,” Ms Vass said.
