Residents wanting to help the needy and support sustainability are encouraged to donate quality goods as part of Brimbank Council’s Reusable Goods Drop-off day on December 3.

The day is part of the council’s bi-annual free event with all donated items in good condition going to the not-for-profit group West Welcome Wagon which helps asylum seekers and refugees settle in Melbourne’s west.

West Welcome Wagon chair Chris Scerri said there was one easy benchmark for people to use when considering what goods to donate.

“What we say is: ‘Would they give it to their daughter?’” he said.

“Good working order things we want.”

Mr Scerri said his organisation needed good quality televisions, microwaves and kitchenware like cutlery to give to refugees.

“These will give them the ability to prepare meals and stay at home,” he said.

Mr Scerri said cooking helped new arrivals with living costs and having an equipped home helped them settle into their new country.

He said other useful items were handbags, backpacks, bed bases, towels and linen.

The Reusable Goods Drop-off Day started in 2019 with previous donations going to the Australian Red Cross and textile recycler, BlockTexx.

Goods can be dropped off opposite the council’s Operations Centre, in Stadium Drive, Keilor Park, on Saturday 3 December 2022, from 9am to 2pm.
