Residents across Melbourne’s north and west are being called upon to reduce their water consumption as state storage levels fall to 61% of capacity.
This current level marks a decrease from the 79% capacity recorded at this time last year. Household water use in the region typically rises by 25% during the summer months, primarily due to increased garden irrigation and outdoor cleaning tasks.
To protect the remaining water supply and reduce the likelihood of future water restrictions, authorities are reminding the community to follow the Permanent Water Saving Rules. Under these rules, residents may only use sprinklers and watering systems between the hours of 6pm and 10am.
Any hand-held hoses used must be leak-free and fitted with a trigger nozzle. The cleaning of hard surfaces such as driveways and decks with a hose is prohibited, and all fountains or water features are required to recirculate water.
Small changes in daily habits are being emphasized as a way to make a significant collective difference in the state’s water security.
Efficient water use now is the primary method for conserving the current supply as dry conditions continue across Victoria. Further information regarding specific water-saving actions can be found on the Ways to Save Water website.
