Copperfield College VCAL students have created a lasting symbol of remembrance at Sunshine Hospital.

The students have designed and erected a remembrance tree in the hospital’s palliative care garden, where friends and family can hang a leaf in recognition of a loved one.

Western Health manager of community engagement and volunteers Jo Spence said after a lengthy planning stage, the tree was ready to be unveiled.

“The students designed the tree in 2016 and now, two years on, we’ve got the process down pat and we’re ready to add leaves,” she said.

“The students feel very much connected to the hospital because they’re contributing in a way that enhances the experience for both patients and families.

“It gives people something where they can be connected to the place where their loved ones may have spent their last few days.”

Ms Spence said the leaves can be bought for a small donation which will go towards equipment on the palliative care ward or maintaining its garden.

“Each leaf has a phrase on it and families are able to add the name of their loved one,” Ms Spence said.

The tree holds about 200 leaves and much like a real tree, will shed leaves and regenerate over time.

“Each leaf will hang from the tree for 12 months,” Ms Spence said. “They’ll then be taken off and sent to the family.

“It’s a way to keep it sustainable and ensure this continues for many years to come.”
