A new program is helping Brimbank women with a disability improve their leadership skills.
The ‘Brimbank Enabling Women’ program is delivered by the council with assistance from Disabilities Victoria, and will run six sessions to help participants build confidence and reduce disadvantage.
Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said the program was established in response to community feedback on the issue.
“Nearly one in five Victorian women has a disability, and it is increasingly recognised that women with disabilities experience additional discrimination,” Cr Giudice said.
“This includes barriers related to health, education, employment, safety, housing and more.
“Brimbank council is committed to making sure that people with a disability have the same rights and opportunities to live, work and socialise as everyone.
“This program will support women to develop confidence in their knowledge and insights about their human rights, advocacy and leadership, and to become more involved in their local community.”
The program, which kicked off on June 7, is part of the Brimbank Community Leadership Program, which has supported more than 500 people since it began in 2010.
