Princess gets royal makeover

A bold makeover will transform Princess Street, St Albans into a hub for the arts.

The $1.2 million upgrade is set to deliver improved safety, more trees, garden beds and seating – all in a vibrant, theatrical design.

Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve said the makeover will create a fun place that extends the Bowery Theatre ‘Be bold’ theme out into the street.

“We want to create a safe and vibrant setting that will help establish this precinct as a hub for the arts, recreation and activity,” Cr Congreve said.

“Princess Street is a key connection for local residents, traders, park users and theatre-goers – so it’s important that this is a safe place where people feel comfortable getting around or meeting up with friends.

“The design takes inspiration from the work of Brimbank-grown artist and provocateur, the late Leigh Bowery, after whom the Bowery Theatre at STACC was named.”

Princess Street will remain open to cars, with a new shared zone to be created with safe pedestrian zones.

Some temporary road closures will be needed to complete the project, with closures planned for February 2019.

Access to the Princess Street carpark will be maintained via Main Road East throughout construction.

Work will begin in early January and is expected to finish in March 2019.
