Greater Western Water (GWW) is encouraging Victoriansa, including those in Brimbank to take some simple steps to ensure their water meters and pipes don’t freeze this winter, which can lead to no running water, damaged pipes and expensive repairs.
The water inside meters and pipes that sit above the ground can freeze when exposed to very cold temperatures. If this happens, residents risk waking up to no running water which would mean not being able to do things like have a shower, wash their hands, flush the toilet or clean the dishes or clothes.
GWW general manager of operations and delivery solutions Jodie Hallam said if the overnight temperature was forecast to drop below zero, residents should prepare to protect their meters.
“To prevent your water meter from freezing during frosty weather, cover it with an item that traps the air around it, like an old blanket, container, box or bucket,” she said.
“If you have pipes above ground level, you can protect them by covering them with insulating material available in hardware stores.
“Make sure these items can be easily removed in case our meter readers or maintenance crews need access to your meter.”
“If your meter or pipes freeze, it’s best to wait for the temperature to rise a little to naturally thaw them. If you can’t wait, pour lukewarm water over the frozen area but never use hot or boiling water as this can damage your pipes.”
If your water meter splits or breaks, call GWW on 13 44 99 to arrange a replacement.
They will also replace any damaged pipes between the meter and the street.
If pipes are damaged between your home and your meter, turn off your main water supply to prevent further damage and contact a licensed plumber to arrange a repair.
