A Derrimut student’s colourful stand against bullying has taken her to Government House in Sydney.
A poster by St Lawrence Primary School grade 4 pupil Angelique was one of 13 highly commended entries in the Interrelate Say No To Bullying competition this year.
The competition attracted 45.000 entries from across the country.
Angelique, 9, said she drew on personal experience to create her poster.
“Since I’ve experienced being bullied, I decided to write down some sayings which can help.
“Things like ‘you are brave’ and ‘stand up for yourself’ because if you stand up bullies will stop.”
Angelique was also keen to make sure her poster was as colourful as it could possibly be.
“I wanted to make it colourful and bright so it would stand out. So I grabbed the entire container and just started drawing everything in colour.”
Angelique said the trip to Sydney was one she won’t soon forget.
“It was my first time and it was really fun,” she said. “I also saw the Opera House, the zoo and at Government House I got a reward poster for my piece.”
“I also got to take a picture with the governor and we got to have a really nice afternoon tea as well.”
Although her poster was named one of the best in the country, Angelique said she didn’t even realise she was entering a competition.
“I just drew it because I wanted to.
“But it was a privilege to go to Government House. When I found out there was that many people who entered, I was blown away.”
