A pop-up shop in Caroline Springs is encouraging the community to talk about cancer.
The Let’s Talk About Cancer pop-up site will be set up at the Caroline Springs Square Shopping Centre for the entire month.
The initiative comes following the success of the Sunshine site, which had more than 250 people visit to speak with cancer nurses.
The initiative offers people the chance to talk with a Western Health cancer nurse about lifestyle changes that can help to prevent cancers, their family history, screening services available and symptoms and signs to talk to their doctor about.
North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network chief executive Christopher Carter said if the site helps just one person detect or prevent cancer, then it’s worth the effort.
“We had a really positive community response to the first pop-up shop, and we’re excited to be able to keep spreading the word throughout the west,” he said.
“Talking about cancer doesn’t have to be scary, and a simple conversation can be the spark that changes, or even saves your life. More than one-third of cancers are preventable, and early detection allows for the best treatment for those who do get cancer.”
Nurses will attend the shop from 10am-4pm Tuesday-Saturday.
