Political play entertains

Locals looking for a night of laughs can head to St Albans to watch the satirical play ‘November,’ which is being staged by Powderkeg Players.

The play, written by Pulitzer Prize winning author David Mamet centres on the story of an incumbent US President facing the challenges of economic downturn, nuclear war and allegations of corruption in the lead up to his November re-election.

Powerkeg Players president Stephen Andrews said the play seems even more relevant today than it was when it first premiered on Broadway in 2008.

“At its heart, it’s a satirical farce revolving around the state of American politics and an indictment on the moral bankruptcy of politicians,” Mr Andrews said.

“So much of the fun of ‘November’ is just relishing Mamet’s piling on of vicious corrupt-politician tropes, and the volleys of super-speed utterances tossed back and forth.

“Dated subject matter? Of course not! Corruption never goes out of style!”

The play is being staged at St Albans Senior Citizens Centre where the crew has built an oval office on stage over the past few months.

“…much to the amusement (or bemusement?) of the St. Albans senior citizens,” Mr Andrews said.

‘November’ is showing at St Albans Senior Citizens Centre, 171 William Street, St Albans on 14, 15, 21 and 22 November at 8pm with a 2pm matinee performance on 15 November.

The show is not suitable for children.
