Police to fine 300 people $240,000 over hoon meets

Brimbank police are expected to issue $240,000 worth of fines to about 300 hoons who gathered at a series of hoon meets last night.

Police responded to reports of a large number of people gathered in Sunshine West, Tullamarine, Derrimut and Keilor Park, performing illegal activities in their vehicles.

They pepper sprayed a 17 year-old after he hindered police.

He was released and is expected to be charged on summons with hindering police and offensive language.

The offence of ‘attend a hoon event’ attracts an $800 fine – a bylaw introduced by Brimbank council to stamp out hoon meetings in the west.

In a post to Facebook, Brimbank police told attendees to check their mail.

“Check your mail box next week for the $800 Brimbank Council ticket for attending. If the car is registered in Mum’s name you might have a bit of explaining to do.”
