Police recorded 116 driving offences across Brimbank as part of a four-day statewide road policing operation over the Australia day long weekend.
As part of ‘operation amity’ police made themselves highly visible to locals, and targeted high-risk driving behaviour, with increased roadside alcohol and drug testing conducted over the four days.
In Brimbank, the most common driving offence over the long weekend was disobeying signs and signals, with 42 offenders recorded.
Speeding and seatbelt offences followed, with 27 and 13 incidents, respectively.
Police also identified 10 unregistered vehicles and caught six drink drivers and six drug drivers, in addition to one other combined drink/drug driving offence.
Four disqualified drivers and two unlicensed drivers were also detected.
Other incidents included three mobile phone offences and two cyclist-related offences.
Across the state, 5518 offences were detected during the operation with five lives lost on roads over the four days.
Road Policing Assistant Commissioner Glenn Weir said the number of drink drivers caught during the operation was concerning.
“We continue to see far too many people making poor choices and opting to drink or take drugs and then drive,” Mr Weir said.
“If you think you can drink or take drugs and drive – think again.
“With warm weather set to continue, police will continue to be out conducting alcohol and drug testing anywhere, anytime.”
