More than 80 traffic offences were recorded in Brimbank as part of a four-day road police operation across the Australia Day weekend.
A total of 6728 traffic offences were detected during the road safety blitz.
Locally, police recorded 84 offences in Brimbank.
Of the offences recorded speeding was the biggest problem in the area, with 35 offences recorded. Speeding offences were common across the state, with more than a third of infringements issued to speeding drivers.
Other offences in the local area included, drink drivers (4), drug drivers (3), disqualified drivers (7), unlicensed drivers (5), drivers disobeying signs-signals (2), seatbelt offences (5), mobile phone offences (1), and unregistered vehicles (15).
Police conducted 117,703 alcohol and drug tests across the state, and caught 225 drink drivers and 198 drug drivers.
In addition to these offences, police reported six fatalities across the four-day period bringing the total lives lost to 30 this year, up from 21 at the same time last year.
Acting Road Policing Assistant Commissioner Justin Goldsmith said it was disappointing to have witnessed another tragic period on Victoria’s roads.
“It’s been a particularly bad start to the year, and we’re really concerned about the high number of fatalities this month, particularly on rural roads across the state,” he said.
“With school resuming this week, and more people returning to work after the holidays, now is not the time to be complacent behind the wheel.”
