Police are appealing for information following a hit and run in Deer Park on January 1 which left a man seriously injured.

Investigators have been told the driver of a silver SUV travelling north on Station Road, between Ballarat Road and Tilburn Road, attempted to perform a U-turn and collided with a motorcycle rider travelling south about 10.50am.

The rider, a 55-year-old Albanvale man, sustained severe leg injuries and was taken to hospital where he underwent surgery.

The driver of the SUV failed to stop after the collision, reversing and fleeing north on Station Road.

Police have released an image of the SUV, possibly a Ford Territory, which investigators believe may have had two female occupants at the time of the incident.

Anyone with information or who has dash cam footage of the vehicle travelling in Deer Park on 1 January is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
