A 31-year-old man will face court today after a police car was rammed and officers forced to open fire in Sunshine yesterday.

Police attempted to intercept a white ute on Derby Road about 5.30 pm, however the driver refused to pull over, ramming the police car before driving at an officer.

The officer discharged his firearm and the vehicle stopped.

The Keilor Downs man was pulled from the car and arrested.

He has since been charged with numerous offences including intentionally exposing emergency worker on duty to risk by driving, reckless conduct endanger life, drive manner dangerous and drive while disqualified.

Nobody was hurt during the incident.

It’s the second time in a week that a police car has been rammed.

Last Friday night an officer was seriously injured after a police car was rammed in Sunbury.

Officers had stopped in front of a parked gold coloured Commodore sedan, but as they made to exit the patrol car, the Commodore accelerated and hit the driver’s door, pinning and injuring the Senior Constable.

The officer suffered a broken leg in the incident.

Sunbury man Benjamin Saurini handed himself into police the following day and has been charged with with 14 offences, including ramming an emergency vehicle, assaulting a police officer, conduct endangering life and unlicensed driving.

He was yesterday granted bail under strict conditions.

He is due back in court on September 19.

The police officer remains in hospital.
