Plan to protect historic gardens

Brimbank council has put in place a new plan to manage and protect Sunshine’s historical H.V. McKay Memorial Gardens.

Mayor Margaret Giudice said the plan would help protect the iconic gardens through future challenges such as climate change.

“The H.V. McKay Memorial Gardens have played an important part in Brimbank’s history since they were developed for the workers of the nearby Sunshine Harvester works in the early 20th century,” Cr Giudice said.

“As owner and custodian of this important part of our heritage, the council must work to protect the gardens so that future generations can enjoy their history and splendour.”

The site is the earliest example of an industrial garden in Victoria and is the only heritage-listed garden in Brimbank.

The new master plan highlights the need for new design and horticultural understanding in order to future-proof the gardens against climate change, as well as opportunities to improve irrigation and access.

The plan also aims to provide the community with an understanding and appreciation of the history of the gardens.

The plan was developed following community consultations earlier this year, which included feedback from the Friends of H.V. McKay Memorial Gardens.
